Gallery North needed a space that would not compete with the work it exhibits. A former sixties harbour warehouse offered what new construction rarely can: height, structural honesty, and a patina that cannot be simulated.
The intervention is deliberately minimal: a reinforced concrete floor, whitewashed walls, a system of concealed LED lighting that follows the existing roof structure rather than covering it. Everything new (reception, restrooms, storage) is contained within a single compact volume along the north wall, freeing the rest of the space for complete curatorial flexibility.
The result is a gallery that reads as a void ready to be filled, not as a finished architectural statement.
